Behind the Bear

A Conversation with Author, Joe Lanzisero

Following our heartwarming virtual launch party in the NoWhere Metaverse, where we welcomed Lemonade the Yellow Bear to the world, we sat down with former Disney Imagineer Joe Lanzisero to learn more about his delightful new children's book.

Q: How was your first launch party in the metaverse?

A: So much fun! The yellow theme contest was a highlight - we had someone show up in this fantastic yellow suit and glasses who stole the show. Everyone's enthusiasm was contagious, and we're already planning another event for Christmas.

Q: What sparked your inspiration for Lemonade the Yellow Bear?

A: It really came from watching my young grandchildren experience the world. There's something magical about how they see everything with such innocence, wonder, and pure joy.

Q: The name 'Lemonade' is quite unique for a bear. What's the story behind it?

A: Well, lemons are sour, just like the world can be sometimes. But when you add a little sugar, you get lemonade. That's what this little bear does - he adds "sugar" to the world through his joyful, innocent approach to life.

Q: What messages do you hope children take away from this story?

A: I want them to realize that the world is full of wonder if you just stop to notice it. Your imagination can take you anywhere. There's so much joy in simple things - making friends, creating with your hands, loving a lot, and playing a lot!

Q: Yellow plays such a big role in this book - both in Lemonade's appearance and throughout the story. What drew you to that color?

A: Yellow isn't just the color of lemons - it's probably the most joyful color there is! It reminds us of sunshine and so many wonderful things that Lemonade enjoys in his adventures.

Q: How is Lemonade different from other children's book characters?

A: Instead of following a typical story structure, this book flows as a series of moments and experiences. Another special aspect is that everything is completely handmade - no computer graphics or AI. I actually made a point to color outside the lines and keep the images a bit imperfect, so children could see the art as something they might create themselves.

Q: Creating a children's book must have come with its own set of challenges. How did those shape your approach?

A: You know, I prefer to see challenges as opportunities. This book was my chance to create something different from other children's books. It became an opportunity to bring some simple joy to the world and remind everyone, no matter their age, that there's wonder all around us.

Q: Is there a particular moment in the book that you feel really captures who Lemonade is?

A: There are many special moments, but I think the final page really sums it up. It shows readers "How to have a great Lemonade Day" and truly captures the essence of his character and the book's main messages.

Q: Who did you write this book for? What age group did you have in mind?

A: I wrote it with very young children in mind, around ages 3 to 6. The simple messages and bold drawing style really speak to that age group.

Q: What makes Lemonade's story connect with both children and their parents?

A: The themes of innocence, joy, imagination, and kindness are truly universal - they touch hearts at any age.

Q: In today's world, why did you feel it was important to focus on themes of friendship and kindness?

A: While these are timeless messages, they feel particularly meaningful in our current turbulent times. Sometimes we all need a reminder to see the world through more innocent, joyful eyes.

Q: Any plans to continue Lemonade's adventures in future books?

A: Let's see how this first book resonates with readers, then I'll decide what's next for Lemonade.
